Behaviour of laboratory mice in different housing conditions when allowed to self-administer an anxiolytic

Standard cages prevent mice from performing several natural behaviours for which they are motivated. As a consequence, abnormal behaviours sometimes develop and mice often spend long periods inactive. To improve welfare, cages are sometimes furnished with items such as nesting...

Effects of humidity and environmental enrichment on food-chewing behavior in mice

Neither of the enrichment tools (Gumabones or a cellulose/corncob mixture) improved food-chewing behavior. As the humidity decreased over the 3-wk period, so did the abnormal behavior, regardless of the enrichment status of the cage.

Effect of restraint and injection methods on heart rate and body temperature in mice

It was found that heart rate (HR), and to a lesser extent also body temperature (BT), parallels plasma corticosterone (pCORT) values after subjecting the animals to different methods of restraint. Secondly, the acute stress response caused by different injection methods...

The effect of routine experimental procedures on physiological paramters in mice kept under different husbandry conditions

Single-housing in a non-enriched environment significantly elevated heart rate and blood pressure and recovery time following routine experimental procedures relative to social-housing in an enriched environment.

Evaluation of five bedding types on male nude mouse health and aggression

From this study mice housed on thick corn cob appeared to show least aggression. Aspen chip seemed to increase aggression in male nudes.

The effects of individual housing on mice and rats: a review

Although the effects of individual housing have been an issue for the last forty years, it remains difficult to elucidate its impact on animal welfare.

Hair barbering in mice: implications for neurobehavioural research

Barbering (fur/whisker trimming, the Dalila effect) is a behaviour-associated hair and whisker loss frequently seen in laboratory rodents, including mice. Here we analyse barbering behaviour in 129S1, NMRI, C57BL/6 and BALB/c mouse strains and some of their F1 hybrids. Our...

Individual and group housing in N-type Ca2+ Channel a1B subunit-deficient mice differently affect motor activity

We evaluated the effect of a 6-wk postweaning period of either individual or group housing on the activity displayed in a novel environment with or without previous habituation. Without habituation, male homozygous a1B-deficient mice showed significantly higher activity than wild-type...

Effects of light or dark phase testing on behavioural and cognitive performance in DBA mice

Naive DBA/2N (DBA) mice were tested in the modified hole board (mHB) either during the dark phase under red light or during the light phase under white light. Different behavioural dimensions and cognitive functions were evaluated in parallel. Depending on...
