The influence of handling by humans on the behaviour, growth and corticosteroids in the juvenile female pig

Animals who are fearful of humans show a marked increase in corticosteroid levels both in the presence and in the absence of people. Their growth and reproductive performance is impaired.

Cortisol responses under different housing conditions in female squirrel monkeys

Plasma levels of cortisol were significantly lower in pair-housed females than in those living in a social group or individually. The increment in cortisol levels after stress (handling and ether anesthesia) also was smaller in females housed in pairs. Dominant...

The feasability of improving the captive environments of the pongidae

Attention is focused on the possible association between low fertility in captive great apes and the absence of naturalistic features from captive habitats. ... Improvement of the captive environment is defined as the introduction of greater temporal variability that corresponds...

Conditioned and unconditioned influences on body temperature and ethanol hypothermia in laboratory rats

An increase in body temperature occurred in animals who's individual cages were removed from their usual position. After one hour at the new location body temperature had increased 1.3C. Movement of an entire cage rack, with the cages remaining in...

Behaviour of pigs and the design of a new housing system

Based on ethological observations of free-ranging pigs, a new housing system was designed incorporating features that allow the animals to express a much wider range of species-typical behavior patterns than in the conventional housing systems. Those species-typical behaviors are described.
