Components of an animal training program at a large institution

The application of positive reinforcement training (PRT) has increased in zoological, laboratory, and research settings in recent years, however there is little literature pertaining to the development and implementation of such programs. Over the past year, Yerkes National Primate Research...

A note on the effect of olfactory stimulation on the behaviour and welfare of zoo-housed gorillas

Overall, findings suggest that olfactory stimulation in the form of odour-impregnated cloths has little effect on the behaviour of captive gorillas. This raises questions over the value of olfactory stimulation as a useful method of environmental enrichment for this species.

A brief note on the effects of novel enrichment on an unwanted behaviour of captive bonobos

Animals in captivity may show undesirable behaviour when they are not sufficiently challenged, making it essential for their well-being to provide daily enrichment to zoo animals. Primates need a regular replacement with novel enrichment objects to prevent them from getting...

Effect of environmental enrichment on behavioral and endocrine aspects of a captive orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)

Our results demonstrate that, after enrichment, Karen was observed at the top of the trees 97.64% of the time, a value similar to that found by Gippoliti (2000) in free-ranging orangutans, who remained day and night up to 10 meters...

Social buffering of the stress response: Diversity, mechanisms, and functions

Protracted or repeated activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenocortical (HPA) system is associated with a variety of physical and psychological pathologies. Studies dating back to the 1970s have documented many cases in which the presence of a social companion can moderate HPA...

A rational approach to enriched nutrition for nonhuman primates

Obesity is a concern with nonhuman primates (NHPs) housed in captivity for extended periods of time, mostly due to overfeeding and lack of exercise. This is often compounded by environmental enrichment programs that include different types of food. That is...

Space use as an indicator of enclosure appropriateness: A novel measure of captive animal welfare

Empirical measures of animal behavior and space use within the captive environment can provide critical information about animals' requirements, preferences and internal states. Chimpanzees showed significant differences in how they used structural elements (P = 0.021), mesh barriers (P =...

Applications of positive reinforcement training in captive orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) and Taiwanese macaques (Macaca cyclopsis)

PRT is a good way of shaping the behavior of captive animals and doing so can make the animals less stressed to promote their well being. PRT is commonly used by captive animal organizations in many countries, but not in...
