Welcome to the Refinement Database

Search scientific articles, books, and other publications related to improving or safeguarding the welfare of animals used in research and testing.

The Refinement Database, launched by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) in 2000, is a curated collection of published scientific articles and books on topics related to the refinement of housing, husbandry, care, and use of animals in research and testing. The database is intended to provide the most up-to-date information on best practices for improving or safeguarding animal welfare. It is updated every four months; the most recent update was made in April 2026.

  • Use the filters to search publications by Animal Type and/or Topic.
  • Most articles published before the year 2010 cannot be filtered by Topic. If you wish your search to include articles published before 2010, do not use the Topic filter. Instead, you can add a keyword to your search.
  • You can also add a keyword in addition to using the Animal Type and Topic filters to further narrow your search. For example, after selecting Topic: Environmental Enrichment, you could add the keyword "music" to refine your search to publications on music-related environmental enrichment. Or, you could add an author's name to search for publications by a particular individual.

3D-printable non-invasive head immobilization system for non-human primates (2026)

Shahbazi, E., Nguyen, D., Swedan, T. et al.

Background: Efficient head fixation is critical in primate behavioral experiments for accurate eye tracking and neural studies. Existing methods risk infection and bone necrosis due to their invasive nature. New method: We propose a custom-designed,...

A collaborative, multi-institutional growth standard for dam-reared infant rhesus and pigtail macaques (Macaca mulatta and Macaca nemestrina) in research settings (2026)

Haertel, A. J., Berns, K. E., Falkenstein, K. (Shelley) P. et al.

A multicenter study was undertaken to generate new weight-for-age growth standards to monitor the growth of infant rhesus and pigtail macaques in research breeding colonies. Previously, single institutions have developed reference growth curves, under the...

A comparative analysis of the cat stress score and the novel psychological quality of life assessment tool for cats in a shelter setting (2026)

Lamon, T. K., Slater, M. R., Daigle, C. et al.

Given that there were approximately 4 million cats in shelters across 20 countries in 2024, there is a critical need to have accurate, reliable, non-invasive tools to evaluate shelter cat stress and welfare. This study...

A longitudinal exploration of protected contact and positive reinforcement training in elephants (2026)

Wilson, M. L., Kelling, A. S., Perdue, B. M.

Training is an essential part of meeting the needs of elephants in human care. In particular, training in a protected contact environment inherently offers more control over the environment and the choice to perform requested...

A new and less invasive surgical approach to the mouse spared nerve injury model of peripheral neuropathic pain (2026)

Rought, R., Rodrigues, R., Sharif-Naeini, R. et al.

Background: Spared nerve injury (SNI) is a widely used rodent model in the study of peripheral neuropathic pain. The injury, that involves ligation and resection of the common peroneal and tibial branches of the sciatic...

A software based, minimally invasive validated image processing approach for the visualization of blood flow dynamics in mice (2026)

İnan, T., Doğru, M. T., Sara, M. Y. et al.

Background The blood flow changes due to various physiological or pathological causes represent the response of the CNS for the maintenance of metabolic and functional requirements of the brain and related structures. Visualization of blood...

Advancing ethical standards in Göttingen Minipigs studies: The feasibility and reliability of Vascular Access ButtonsTM (2026)

Reijnaers, M., van Dijk, J., Warmels, G. et al.

The use of Vascular Access ButtonsTM (VABs) is gaining traction in animal research as a less invasive alternative to traditional venipuncture methods and a superior option compared with existing alternatives, such as vascular access ports...

Affective and behavioural interactions between human handlers and laboratory rats (2026)

Feddo, C. C., Robinson, E. S. J., Hinchcliffe, J. K.

In laboratory settings, human–rat interactions are necessary and frequent, yet the impact of different handlers on the behaviour of the animal is underexplored. This study examined how human behavioural responses - confidence, experience, and physiological...

Analgesic efficacy of oral tramadol–dipyrone combination in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy (2026)

Fantoni, D. T., Yazbek, K. V. B., de Lima, I. T. et al.

Introduction Selecting an appropriate analgesic for cats can be challenging due to potential unwanted side effects, short duration of action, or unsuitable presentation for home administration. This study aimed to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and...

Anesthetic management and complications during transvenous pacemaker implantation in dogs (2026)

Oliveira, G. M. dos S. de, Travalini de Lima, M., Martins, A. R. de C. et al.

Introduction With the growing number of veterinary centers performing pacemaker implantation in small animals, a better understanding of anesthetic management of these procedures has become essential. Most available studies focus primarily on surgical techniques, with...

Application of minimally invasive physiological monitoring techniques in pigs for scientific purposes (2026)

Layton, R., Beggs, D., Mansell, P. et al.

Wearable and implantable physiological monitors are designed for minimally invasive health assessment in companion animals. We aimed to establish proof-of-concept for the use of PetPace collar monitors and VetChip implantable monitoring devices in pigs. PetPace...

Assessing laboratory animal welfare: The crucial importance of construct validity (2026)

Mason, G.

Assessing laboratory animals’ welfare – their current and/or past subjective affective states – is essential for ethical and regulatory reasons (and central to biomedical research into, for example, pain, nausea or anxiety). But this is...

Assessing local anesthesia in Octopus bimaculoides to provide analgesia (2026)

Copio, J. N., Schulz, N. G., Ragsdale, C. W. et al.

Despite the substantial growth of cephalopod research over the past 15 years, effective pain management for these animals remains largely unstudied, and no US federal regulations currently address cephalopod analgesia. This 2-phase study evaluated the...

Assessing nest-building performance in mice: A multifactorial study of strain, age, sex, and environmental factors (2026)

Cintra, L., Hernandes, C. F., Alexandre-Ribeiro, S. R. et al.

Providing nesting material is one of the main forms of environmental enrichment for laboratory mice. Nest building is an innate behavior, widely observed in wild mice, which construct complex, dome-shaped, multi-layered structures. Although various materials...

Assessing stress in dogs during saliva sampling in socio-psychological research: Preliminary development of animal-friendly practical procedures (2026)
