Welcome to the Refinement Database

Search scientific articles, books, and other publications related to improving or safeguarding the welfare of animals used in research and testing.

The Refinement Database, launched by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) in 2000, is a curated collection of published scientific articles and books on topics related to the refinement of housing, husbandry, care, and use of animals in research and testing. The database is intended to provide the most up-to-date information on best practices for improving or safeguarding animal welfare. It is updated every four months; the most recent update was made in November 2025.

  • Use the filters to search publications by Animal Type and/or Topic.
  • Most articles published before the year 2010 cannot be filtered by Topic. If you wish your search to include articles published before 2010, do not use the Topic filter. Instead, you can add a keyword to your search.
  • You can also add a keyword in addition to using the Animal Type and Topic filters to further narrow your search. For example, after selecting Topic: Environmental Enrichment, you could add the keyword "music" to refine your search to publications on music-related environmental enrichment. Or, you could add an author's name to search for publications by a particular individual.

Analgesic efficacy of oral tramadol–dipyrone combination in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy (2026)

Fantoni, D. T., Yazbek, K. V. B., de Lima, I. T. et al.

Introduction Selecting an appropriate analgesic for cats can be challenging due to potential unwanted side effects, short duration of action, or unsuitable presentation for home administration. This study aimed to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and...

Automated, stress-free, and precise measurement of songbird weight in neuroscience experiments (2026)

Bonneh, Y., Tuval, A., Ben-Shitrit, I. et al.

Monitoring the health and well-being of research animals is essential for both ethical and scientific purposes. In songbirds, body weight is one of the main indicators of their overall condition, yet traditional weighing methods can...

Biopierces: Drug-eluting ear tags for infection prevention in animal tagging (2026)

Cartmell, C., Naseri, E., Kerr, R. G. et al.

Ear tagging is a routine practice in livestock management, but it can be associated with bacterial colonization and infection at puncture sites. This study evaluated drug-eluting ear tags (Biopierce), incorporating chlorhexidine (CHX) in a poly(lactic-co-glycolic...

Euthanasia methods in invertebrates: A critical narrative review of methodological and welfare standards (2026)

Bakker, J., Garza, M. A. de la, Morel, M. et al.

Invertebrates are increasingly consumed and kept as pets, research models, and in zoological exhibits, creating a growing need to better understand their clinical management and welfare. However, the knowledge regarding nociception, pain perception, and euthanasia...

Evaluating behavioral management practices for laboratory nonhuman primates: An international survey (2026)

Baker, K. C., Sewell, F. R., Prescott, M. J.

The largest survey to date of behavioral management practices among facilities breeding and housing nonhuman primates (NHPs) for research was conducted from 2019 to 2020. Its primary objective was to analyze and compare practices across...

Fecal glucocorticoid metabolites as stress biomarkers in common buzzards (Buteo buteo) across rehabilitation phases: Implications for raptor welfare (2026)

Grundei, L.-L., Wolf, T. E., Brandes, F. et al.

Taking wildlife into human care is a balancing act between benefits and harms, as handling and captivity can cause chronic stress that can lead to permanent physiological changes. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate stress...

Fish welfare in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS): The imperative for environmental enrichment (EE) (2026)

Fruscella, L., Passantino, A., Kotzen, B.

Aquaculture has become the fastest-growing food production sector worldwide, recently surpassing wild-capture fisheries in total output. This rapid expansion underscores the need to ensure sustainability through robust animal welfare standards. Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) are...

Impact of different stocking densities on growth performance, welfare and physiology of Litopenaeus vannamei in RAS (2026)

Gamberoni, P., Bögner, M., Kreuz, E. et al.

Optimal stocking density allows shrimp farmers to maximise profit while maintaining animal welfare. To date, holistic assessments of chronic crowding stress effect on Litopenaeus vannamei are lacking regarding biological impairments, stress-related behaviors, and recovery capacity....

Influence of group size on performance and tail biting in growing-finishing pigs with intact tails (2026)

Archer, C., Forster, S., Hilbrands, A. et al.

This study investigated the effect of group size on tail damage and growth performance in growing-finishing pigs with intact tails. A total of 432 pigs were housed indoors on fully-slatted floors and assigned to either...

Potential new biomarkers in pig saliva for differentiating between the effects of different conditions of mixing and density at pre-slaughter: A preliminary proteomicstudy (2026)

Botía, M., Muñoz-Prieto, A., Bustillo, A. O. et al.

The intensification of pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) production systems raises concerns regarding animal welfare, particularly during pre-slaughter conditions, a phase associated with significant stress. Saliva is increasingly recognised as a non-invasive matrix for detecting stress-related...

The inoculation fallacy: why early enrichment cannot compensate for poor adult environments (2026)

Parker, M. O.

Early-life environmental enrichment (EE) is widely promoted as a route to building resilience and competence, yet these benefits rarely persist when adult environments lack opportunities for agency. Resilience and competence are behavioral properties of current...

When pain outlasts our drugs: The case for sustained-release analgesia in sheep (2026)

Baygi, M. N., Metcalf, L. N., Kimble, B. et al.

Pain associated with routine husbandry procedures in sheep can persist for several days or even weeks, yet current analgesic options, such as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) meloxicam, typically provide only 24–36 h of analgesia....

A computational model to support the welfare-based management of a laboratory colony of common marmosets (2025)

Gillard, J. J. 2025.

Here, a computational model to forecast the population dynamics of a laboratory colony of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) is presented. This tool supports decision-making that seeks to maximize welfare and maintain a healthy and genetically...

A cross-sectional study to investigate associations between flooring substrates and prevalence of limb and paw abnormalities of dogs housed in commercial breeding facilities (2025)

Stella, J., Gomes, P., Shreyer, T. et al.

Understanding the impact of environmental and management factors on the health and behavior of dogs housed in commercial breeding (CB) facilities is critical to their welfare. The specific aims of the study were to assess...

A customised combination of environmental enrichment reduces aggression in CD-1 male mice (2025)

Veness, A., Galichet, C., Murphy, S. et al.

Murine aggression has profound implications on animal welfare and husbandry. This report examines how three distinct combinations of environmental enrichment – wheel, igloo and tunnel; wheel, igloo, and tunnel with nesting; and tunnel with nesting...
