Welcome to the Refinement Database

Search scientific articles, books, and other publications related to improving or safeguarding the welfare of animals used in research and testing.

The Refinement Database, launched by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) in 2000, is a curated collection of published scientific articles and books on topics related to the refinement of housing, husbandry, care, and use of animals in research and testing. The database is intended to provide the most up-to-date information on best practices for improving or safeguarding animal welfare. It is updated every four months; the most recent update was made in April 2026.

  • Use the filters to search publications by Animal Type and/or Topic.
  • Most articles published before the year 2010 cannot be filtered by Topic. If you wish your search to include articles published before 2010, do not use the Topic filter. Instead, you can add a keyword to your search.
  • You can also add a keyword in addition to using the Animal Type and Topic filters to further narrow your search. For example, after selecting Topic: Environmental Enrichment, you could add the keyword "music" to refine your search to publications on music-related environmental enrichment. Or, you could add an author's name to search for publications by a particular individual.

Assessing laboratory animal welfare: The crucial importance of construct validity (2026)

Mason, G.

Assessing laboratory animals’ welfare – their current and/or past subjective affective states – is essential for ethical and regulatory reasons (and central to biomedical research into, for example, pain, nausea or anxiety). But this is...

Assessing local anesthesia in Octopus bimaculoides to provide analgesia (2026)

Copio, J. N., Schulz, N. G., Ragsdale, C. W. et al.

Despite the substantial growth of cephalopod research over the past 15 years, effective pain management for these animals remains largely unstudied, and no US federal regulations currently address cephalopod analgesia. This 2-phase study evaluated the...

Assessing nest-building performance in mice: A multifactorial study of strain, age, sex, and environmental factors (2026)

Cintra, L., Hernandes, C. F., Alexandre-Ribeiro, S. R. et al.

Providing nesting material is one of the main forms of environmental enrichment for laboratory mice. Nest building is an innate behavior, widely observed in wild mice, which construct complex, dome-shaped, multi-layered structures. Although various materials...

Automated, stress-free, and precise measurement of songbird weight in neuroscience experiments (2026)

Bonneh, Y., Tuval, A., Ben-Shitrit, I. et al.

Monitoring the health and well-being of research animals is essential for both ethical and scientific purposes. In songbirds, body weight is one of the main indicators of their overall condition, yet traditional weighing methods can...
