Welcome to the Refinement Database

Search scientific articles, books, and other publications related to improving or safeguarding the welfare of animals used in research and testing.

The Refinement Database, launched by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) in 2000, is a curated collection of published scientific articles and books on topics related to the refinement of housing, husbandry, care, and use of animals in research and testing. The database is intended to provide the most up-to-date information on best practices for improving or safeguarding animal welfare. It is updated every four months; the most recent update was made in November 2025.

  • Use the filters to search publications by Animal Type and/or Topic.
  • Most articles published before the year 2010 cannot be filtered by Topic. If you wish your search to include articles published before 2010, do not use the Topic filter. Instead, you can add a keyword to your search.
  • You can also add a keyword in addition to using the Animal Type and Topic filters to further narrow your search. For example, after selecting Topic: Environmental Enrichment, you could add the keyword "music" to refine your search to publications on music-related environmental enrichment. Or, you could add an author's name to search for publications by a particular individual.

Analgesic efficacy of oral tramadol–dipyrone combination in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy (2026)

Fantoni, D. T., Yazbek, K. V. B., de Lima, I. T. et al.

Introduction Selecting an appropriate analgesic for cats can be challenging due to potential unwanted side effects, short duration of action, or unsuitable presentation for home administration. This study aimed to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and...

Anesthetic management and complications during transvenous pacemaker implantation in dogs (2026)

Oliveira, G. M. dos S. de, Travalini de Lima, M., Martins, A. R. de C. et al.

Introduction With the growing number of veterinary centers performing pacemaker implantation in small animals, a better understanding of anesthetic management of these procedures has become essential. Most available studies focus primarily on surgical techniques, with...

Automated, stress-free, and precise measurement of songbird weight in neuroscience experiments (2026)

Bonneh, Y., Tuval, A., Ben-Shitrit, I. et al.

Monitoring the health and well-being of research animals is essential for both ethical and scientific purposes. In songbirds, body weight is one of the main indicators of their overall condition, yet traditional weighing methods can...

Biopierces: Drug-eluting ear tags for infection prevention in animal tagging (2026)

Cartmell, C., Naseri, E., Kerr, R. G. et al.

Ear tagging is a routine practice in livestock management, but it can be associated with bacterial colonization and infection at puncture sites. This study evaluated drug-eluting ear tags (Biopierce), incorporating chlorhexidine (CHX) in a poly(lactic-co-glycolic...

Comparison of analgesic efficacy between intrafunicular and intratesticular lidocaine injection in dogs (2026)

Lohinger, C., Verdier, N., Klonner, M. E. et al.

Elective surgical orchiectomy is a commonly performed procedure in dogs that requires adequate pain management. Multiple studies have shown that various local anaesthetic techniques improve analgesia and may reduce side effects associated with systemically administered...

Developing and validating a holistic welfare assessment tool for zoo-housed great apes: Integrating resource-based measures with behavioural ecology insights (2026)

Neufuss, J., Pullen, K., Farmer, H. L. et al.

Assessing the welfare of zoo-housed great apes is essential to ensure high standards of care, maintain zoos’ ethical and educational credibility, and support their conservation roles. However, welfare assessment remains challenging due to the complex...

Effects of hand-rearing and group size on chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) social competence in captivity (2026)

Murray, L. E.

The behavior of individual animals reflects both internal states and external context. For captive animals, their early life experiences can influence later adjustment, particularly their social competence. In addition, the way in which they are...

Effects of housing and environmental enrichment on performance, welfare, and air quality in fattening pigs (2026)

Lee, J., Song, H., Biswas, S. et al.

In intensive pig production systems, limited space and lack of enrichment materials (EMs) restrict natural behaviors, inducing chronic stress and impairing welfare and health. Conventional EMs such as straw and sawdust improve comfort but increase...

Effects of natural and artificial shade on behavior, physiology, and productivity in water buffalo: A narrative review (2026)

Mota-Rojas, D., Lanzoni, L., Fernandes Bettencourt, A. et al.

Although water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are a species known for their adaptability to different environments, their anatomical characteristics make them susceptible to heat stress in hot-humid climate conditions. In productive systems, the provision of natural...

Effects of pen partition design and hiding facilities on elimination and lying behavior of finishing pigs (2026)

Yu, Z., Wang, H., He, Z. et al.

In intensive commercial pig production systems, the spatial distribution of elimination and lying behaviors plays a crucial role in pen hygiene, management efficiency, and animal welfare. Pen partition design and the provision of hiding facilities...

Efficacy and adverse effects of three delivery methods for aerosolized salbutamol in anesthetized European moose (Alces alces alces): A case series (2026)

Morelli, J., Hoby, S., Heiderich, E. et al.

Wild and captive European moose (Alces alces alces) are routinely anesthetized with drug combinations including alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonists, dissociative anesthetics, and opioids. Reportedly, severe respiratory depression, ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) mismatch, and hypoxemia are common complications in...

EPI-DOM framework for fish welfare assessment: External and internal indicators for tilapia in aquaculture (2026)

Martínez-Yáñez, R.

Introduction: The EPI-DOM framework proposes an applied epidemiological approach to evaluate and manage tilapia welfare in laboratory and production systems, integrating animal-based indicators with risk factors organized into operational domains (management, environment, interaction). Methods: An...

Ethological constraints and welfare-related bias in laboratory mice: Implications of housing, lighting, and social environment (2026)

Török, H. K., Bárdos, B.

Laboratory mice are the most widely used model organisms in biomedical and behavioral research, yet growing concerns regarding reproducibility and translational validity have highlighted the substantial influence of housing and husbandry conditions on experimental outcomes....

Euthanasia methods in invertebrates: A critical narrative review of methodological and welfare standards (2026)

Bakker, J., Garza, M. A. de la, Morel, M. et al.

Invertebrates are increasingly consumed and kept as pets, research models, and in zoological exhibits, creating a growing need to better understand their clinical management and welfare. However, the knowledge regarding nociception, pain perception, and euthanasia...

Evaluating behavioral management practices for laboratory nonhuman primates: An international survey (2026)

Baker, K. C., Sewell, F. R., Prescott, M. J.

The largest survey to date of behavioral management practices among facilities breeding and housing nonhuman primates (NHPs) for research was conducted from 2019 to 2020. Its primary objective was to analyze and compare practices across...
