PVC climbing structures & swings

These PVC structures are versatile and easy to make. Not only are they an excellent way to increase primate physical activity, they allow better use of vertical space in cage environments.

Maracas for Macaca? Evaluation of three potential enrichment objects in two species of zoo-housed macaques

One group each of Barbary macaques and stump-tailed macaques, both zoo-housed, received hard replica fruits in three experimental conditions: as empty (unresponsive) objects, as maracas that rattled when manipulated (simple responsive), and as objects from which food items could be...

Enrichment discussion: The sugar question

Jen, Cobie, and Brooke all agreed that corn on the cob(raw, whole, uncooked - no need to shuck!) is a great form of enrichment for macaques. ... Many do eat the outer husks. Our vet has said that they probably...

Enrichment for cats

We have a program in place for staff to go up and interact with the cats. This gives the cats much-needed human interaction and the staff much-needed feline interaction. No data are included in this article.

The use of cage enrichment to reduce male mouse aggression

Aggression was significantly reduced by the addition of novel enrichment [cardboard box, softwood block, cardboard tube]. This reduction was expected as the provision of environmental enrichment for naive animals would decrease the familiarity of the cage and, therefore, lead to...

Straw or seeds: which is better? The influence of straw and/or seeds on the behavioural well-being of captive, group-living mangabeys

The condition 'seeds and straw' yielded more significant positive changes [decreased self-directed behavior; increased foraging and positive social behavior] than either straw or seeds alone.

Commercial cotton nesting material as a predisposing factor for conjunctivitis in athymic nude mice

A colony of Hsd:Athymic Nude-nu mice was found to have an increased prevalence of conjunctivitis. It was theorized, because Athymic Nude mice lack the normal fur, i.e., guard hairs, and eye lashes, the fibers from nestlets can easily become embedded...
