What Should We Do About Animal Welfare? Blackwell Science, Oxford, UK (1999)
Appleby, M. C.
Abstract
Excellent discussion of factors affecting the well-being of captive animals. The physical environment has complex and contradictory effects on animal welfare, but the main problems for many animals kept by humans can be simply summarized: shortage of space and lack of facilities in the space that they have. .. Farms, laboratories and other institutions with nothing to be ashamed of should hold more open days. Those responsible for animals could do more to take the initiative rather than just responding to demands [of the public].
