Utilizing outdoor plantings for behavioral enrichment (1997)

Roberts, B.

Abstract

In the past nine years, the plants have successfully grown to cover much of the surface of the exhibit area. ... We noted that pumpkin plants were one of the most favorite plants. ... In addition to eating the plants, the [group-housed] chimpanzees found them useful for nesting materials, for toys, for over-head cover, for tools, and used as implements of destruction. An additional favorite food was the pollen buds of the giant raweed.
