Transforming environmental health protection (2008)

Collins, F. S., Gray, G. M., Bucher, J. R.

Abstract

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote the evolution of toxicology from a perdominantly observational science at the level of disease-specific models in vivo to a predominantly predictive science focused on broad inclusion of target-specific, mechanism-based, biological observations in vitro. It is a research program that, if successful, will eventually lead to new approaches for safety assessment and a marked refinement and reduction of animal use in toxicology.
