The welfare of non-human primates (2004)

Abstract
Non-human primates show severely disturbed behaviour when raised in isolation and the opportunity to perform social behaviours, like grooming, must be seen as an essential need for these animals. ... We suggest that facility managers consider forming pairs during the quarantine or conditioning period, and then have study directors randomize pairs rather than individuals. This should decrease the likelihood of disruption of compatible pairs to begin an experiment without compromising research objectives. .. Primates kept in inadequate environments frequently manifest stereotyped behaviours, a fairly observable indication of distress.
