The use of positive reinforcement techniques with chimpanzees for enhanced care and welfare (2001)

Laule, G. , Whittaker, M.

Abstract

Training is teaching. Teaching in a positive reinforcement-based system relies on gaining the voluntary cooperation of the chimpanzees during procedures, such as injection, blood collection, auscultation or urine sampling, or husbandry-related situations such as cooperative feeding. Several positive reinforcement training protocols are described in detail and very valuable, practical recommendations made to assure success.
