The rest/activity rhythm of the laboratory rat housed under different systems (1994)
Batchelor, G. R.
Abstract
The mean activity during the hours of darkness for all housing situations was in the region of 50%, while during the day this was reduced to between 14-19%. No matter what housing system [single versus double commune box] and enrichment [no enrichment versus toys + cardboard box + perspex tube] are used these figures will remain fairly constant, in fact in enriched environments resting and sleeping may actually increase, compared to unenriched conditions. .... Enrichment ... via both space and 'toys' may reduce the time these rodents spend awake, but the time that they are awake will be considerably enhanced in behavioural richness and diversity.
