Abstract

The data collected in this study indicate that the zoo environment leads to a decrease in social behavior both between adults and between adults and young, with increased parent-young aggression and reduced play and mounting behavior. ... The environment of the exhibition cage, and in particular human proximity, was instrumental in bringing about the changes observed. .... The negative influence of the public was even stronger in the case of a small cage where the maximum distance the tamarins could maintain from the public was substantially smaller.
