The family system for pigs: developments at Aberdeen (1994)
Arey, D. S.
Abstract
It was demonstrated that maternal behaviour was improved in the Family System and that the sows continued to suckle their piglets long after four weeks, by which time sows are weaned in commercial production. This resulted in higher piglet growth rates than those recorded for commercial conditions. Pen design and familiarity between sows are also important factors in reducing aggression around farrowing. Improvements in pen design have resulted in piglet production figures which have equalled those observed in farrowing crates.
