The effect of feeding and housing on the behaviour of the laboratory rabbit (1999)

Krohn, T. C., Ritskes-Hoitinga, J., Svendsen, P.

Abstract

Feeding the animals at 14:00 h [wild rabbits forage primarily late in the afternoon and during the night!] reduced abnormal behaviour during the dark period compared to feeding at 08:00 h. ... While the [individually housed] rabbits in cages spent 2-5% of the time performing abnormal behaviour like biting the bars or scratching the bottom of the cage, these activities were virtually absent in group-housed rabbits in floor pens.
