The effect of bedding on the behaviour and welfare of pigs (1993)

Arey, D. S.

Abstract

Straw bedding provides a number of functions which affect the behaviour and welfare of pigs including comfort, recreation and diet. Straw bedding reduces physical discomfort in pigs at all stages; it allows the performance of nest building behaviour in sows prior to farrowing and contributes to the welfare of the piglets; it provides a suitable opportunity for pigs to forage, promotes activity and reduces abnormal behaviours such as apathy, stereotypies and anti-social activity.
