Small changes, big results (2007)
Bechard, A.
Abstract
This paper examines how weaning age influences the welfare of laboratory mice. Results indicate that delaying weaning reduces adult anxiety, as measured by an elevated plus-maze. In females, weaning at a later age seems to decrease the prevalence of both alopecia and stereotypic behavior in adulthood. The results were favorable toward weaning when the mice are 5 weeks old, compared to the 3 week standard imposed by most facilities.
