Self-aggression in macaques: five case studies (1983)

Pond, C. L., Rush, H. G.

Abstract

All [5 adult males] were individually caged. Four of the animals showed an increased level of SIB during stressful situations, such as movement of an animal to a new cage, escape of other monkeys. Only one monkey showed SIB in the absence of environmental stimuli or human contact. Pharmocological treatment reduced the frequency of SIB but did not elimate this behavioral pathology.
