Review: Zebrafish environmental enrichment (2016)

Nichols, C., Wilson, C.

Abstract

Recently environmental enrichment for laboratory housed fish has received increasing levels of attention from a variety of interested parties from hobbyists, through animal technologists and aquaculturists, to scientists. Over the last few years, the growth in use of Zebrafish demonstrates a clear need both for science and animal welfare to address the subject of environmental enrichment. However, how close are we to actually understanding and providing a framework for the environmental enrichment husbandry within and across Zebrafish facilities? An improved knowledge and understanding of the fundamental biological requirements is needed and, without this knowledge it is difficult to determine the optimal conditions for laboratory fish husbandry.
