Recommendations for investigators using pigs in research (1997)

Grandin, T.

Abstract

Valuable, basic recommendations for pig-adequate husbandry. Provide pigs with roughage; enrich the environment to counteract frustration and boredom resulting from chronic understimulation; provide pigs with regular positive human contact; allow the pigs to run up and down the aisles at least once a week; when a pig has to be removed from the home pen for a research procedure, always take another familiar pig along; do not subject pigs to forced movement and handling procedures; house pigs in compatible groups; if temporarily single-housed, allow the animal to keep visual contact with other familiar pigs; do not tether pigs; provide enough space for movement
