Recognizing behavioral needs (1989)
Friend, T.
Abstract
Behavioral needs may be defined as behaviors that are motivated largely by internal stimuli and, if an animal is prevented from performing them for prolonged periods, the individual's welfare may be compromised. .... First studying animals under 'natural' conditions, in order to determine the species' ethogram, followed by designed experimentation offers a logical approach for an organized method of recognizing behavioral needs.
