Abstract

This presentation describes current practices in maintaining primates in Australian zoos, and addresses issues concerning primate welfare. ... Key elements of successful environmental enrichment include providing choice for the animal, providing challenges that are within the capabilities of the individual, including variation and spontaneity, and ensuring a basic constant routine to which the variations are added. .. Effective conditioning contributes to primate welfare by facilitating management, reducing stress and providing opportunities for a more flexible approach to routines.
