Proposed new standards for exhibiting primates in New South Wales (2001)

Crane, M.

Abstract

To address primate psychological/behavioural needs the proposed standards create requirements in relation to the following: behavioural enrichment program- to stimulate all five of the animal's senses. The aim of such a program is to regularly create novel situations for the animals. compatibility/rejected individuals - these provisions are designed to minimise the number of animals held by themselves or which suffer by living in a group with which they are incompatible. Rejected individuals are to be given an appropriate level of social interaction in a low stress manner even if they cannot be housed in an enclosure with other primates. hand-rearing - is discouraged because of the difficulties involved in reintroducing animals to normal social groups. introductions into a group - a part of the document deals specifically with introducing animals back into groups as this process is beneficial for the animals' long-term welfare but can be very dangerous if not handled properly.
