Play behaviour in dairy calves kept in pens: the effect of social contact and space allowance (1998)

Abstract

The results of the present study show that a spatial environment stimulates play in domestic dairy calves. Assuming that the performance of play does indicate good welfare, these results suggest that the welfare of dairy calves may be improved by housing them in large group pens.
