It takes a village: A case study in improving animal welfare with a team approach (2021)

Abstract

There are many factors that need to be considered when caring for groups of nonhuman primates (NHPs) in research, including clinical, behavioral, and scientific issues. Otherwise, there is the potential that decisions are made without taking all these needs into account. To gather as much information as possible, the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) uses a team approach to addressing the welfare needs of the monkeys in our care. We took this approach a step further, increased communication and reconfigured an animal room to optimize group housing, in a partnership with Novo Nordisk, for 26 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) that were to be used in upcoming studies.
