Integrating marmoset husbandry and research (1997)

Abstract
This paper has described the [very successful] attempts of two laboratories conducting behavioural research with common marmosets to integrate husbandry and research. It has been demonstrated that a broad spectrum of research questions can be addressed using marmosets that are socially housed in quite large cages equipped with infra-structures that support and promote species-typical behaviour. It would appear that a policy of first identifying and providing for the physical and psychological well-being of common marmosets in the laboratory, followed by an integration of research methods into the resultant husbandry system, results in a primate research program that provides reliable and consistent data on a long-term basis. Abstract of this work has been published in: European Marmoset Research Group Newsletter 3: 2, 1994; Pryce CR, Milkowski N; Integrating the requirements of marmosets and marmoset research.
