Facilitating the expression of species-specific behaviors (1994)

O'Neill-Wagner, P. L.

Abstract

The attractiveness of high and mid-level perches for nine of the twelve behaviors studied is also apparent. Ground level was the location selected most often [by group-housed animals] for locomotion and foraging. Although the findings suggest that the indoor areas are more desirable overall, the forested outdoor areas offering cover and numerous perching elevations may also be highly attractive. The distance across an open field to get there may have been a primary factor limiting its use.
