Environmentally enriched dog housing (1998)
Loveridge, G. G.
Abstract
Species-adequate housing arrangements for laboratory dogs are described. The provision of a professional, dedicated husbandry team whose primary objective is the care and welfare of the animals, and who spend only half their time in basic husbandry duties, spending the other half of each working day grooming, bathing, training and socializing, the activities which require intense human-pet interaction, has enabled welfare to maintain its importance alongside a vigorous and productive research plan. The exercise and socialization of the dogs has given WCPN a population of friendly, adaptable 'forward-coming' pets, visibly outgoing and stimulated.
