Environmental enrichment for farm animals (1998)

Mench, J. A., Morrow-Tesch, J., Chu, L.

Abstract

Comprehensive review of the literature. It is desirable to socialize the animals to humans. Socialized animals are less fearful, grow more quickly, have higher rates of milk production, and show improved immune competence. Even brief contact with humans can decrease fear responses. ... Certain enrichment techniques are proven to be successful, including perches, nestboxes, and dustbathing material for chickens; straw or other manipulable materials of objects for pigs; and providing opportunities of young calves to engage in suckling behavior. .. One of the least expensive and most effective ways to enrich the environment for both caged- and floor pen-housed chicken is to provide a perch. .. Another important enrichment is to provide chickens with loose material in which to take a dustbath.
