Environmental enrichment and the rehabilitation of nonhuman primates (1998)
Brent, L. , Kessel, A. L.
Abstract
This paper outlines the change in behavior in chimpanzees, baboons and a hybrid baboon/rhesus macaque that underwent extensive rehabilitation efforts, including a move to group housing and a larger, more complex enclosure. Upon transfer to the new environment, the subjects had low levels of abnormal behavior and high levels of social behavior. However, the levels of abnormal behavior increased and social behavior decreased with time in the new habitat, probably due to habituation.
