Empirical use of liquid supplemental nutrition for aged macaques (1993)

Vertein, R., Reinhardt, V.

Abstract

Four aged subjects (30 years and older) received 250 cc of Ensure in stainless steel bowls five times a week. The response was positive in all cases. Weight-loss stopped and the subjects regained their vitality (without showing adverse side effects such as diarrhea), and, in fact, gained weight steadily. Two subjects had been moderately dehydrated and periodically had very hard, pellet-like stools. Regular consumption of the liquid diet corrected this condition within a few days.
