De-arousal properties of stereotyped behaviour: Evidence from pituitary-adrenal correlates in pigs (1983)

Abstract

It was demonstrated that stereotyped chain pulling was accompanied by decreased levels of pituitary adrenal activity, and it was suggested that stereotypies enable the animals to decrease excessive arousal rather than provide an extra source of stimulation.
