Computer-assisted enrichment for zoo-housed orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) (2002)

Abstract
Behavioral changes associated with the provision of the computer included increases in aggression, scratching, solitary play, and time near cagemate, as well as decreases in feeding.... The joystick apparatus was used consistently by the 4 high user subjects throughout the one-hour data collection sessions and across the duration of the study. The lack of habituation across sessions indicates that computer-assisted tasks may be a useful form of environmental enrichment for some orangutans. However, the significant increase in stress related behaviors and aggression may indicate that this form of enrichment is best suited for singly housed animals, or that multiple apparatus should be available.
