Abstract

The current version of the regulations developed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture that specify how to comply with the Animal Welfare Act and its amendments. Handling of all animals shall be done as expeditiously and carefully as possible in a manner that does not cause trauma, overheating, excessive cooling, behavioral stress, physical harm, or unnecessary discomfort [p. 21]. ... Deprivation of food or water shall not be used to train, work, or otherwise handle animals p. 22]. ... Enclosures shall be constructed and maintained so as to provide sufficient space to allow each animal to make normal postural and social [emphasis added] adjustments with adequate freedom of movement. Inadequate space may be indicated by evidence of malnutrition, poor condition, debility, stress, or abnormal behavior patterns.Following specification is NOT made for primates: Enclosures shall be constructed and maintained so as to provide sufficient space to allow each animal to make normal postural and social adjustments with adequate freedom of movement.
