Cage enrichment for galagos: A cautionary tale (2004)

Schaefer, M. S., Nash, L. T.

Abstract

The three conditions evaluated in the new facility were (in temporal order): (1) double cage size with the minimal furnishings listed above (DM), (2) double cage size with enriched furnishings (DE), and (3) single cage size with enriched furnishings (SE). For enrichment, several branches of varying size and orientation, swings, ropes, and chains were added to each cage. .. With our galagos, neither increasing space nor furnishings in the cages of the new facility seemed particularly beneficial in increasing activity. Our intuition suggested that increasing the amount of space and the number of locomotor substrates would be good for the galagos by increasing activity, especially locomotion. However, what seemed intuitively obvious to us was evidently less obvious to the galagos.
