Behaviour of dairy cows kept in extensive (loose housing/pasture) or intensive (tie stall) environments II. Lying and lying-down behaviour (1993)
Krohn, C. C., Munksgaard, L.
Abstract
The results suggest that the act of lying down in the [tie] stalls was aversive to the cows [relatively high incidence of knee and hock inflammations] and that the lying area [concrete floor] and/or the tie-stall system increased the risk of injuries to tethered cows. The decreased duration of lying in resting positions in the tie stalls indicated that the tether system had a negative impact on normal resting behavior.
