Abstract

In order to make the minimum cage space requirements of the Animal Welfare Act more realistic, an amendment is needed which explicitly states that perches, ledges, swings, or other suspended fixtures have to be placed in such a way that they do not block part of the floor space that is needed by the animal to make normal postural adjustments with freedom of movement .At the same time perches, ledges, swings, or other suspended fixtures have to be placed at a height that allows the animal to sit on them in a comfortable position without touching the ceiling with the head and without touching the floor with the tail.
