AnaesthesiaSkills in Veterinary Medicine: Perioperative Management in Small, Companion and Domestic Animals (2024)

Eberspächer-Schweda, E.

Abstract

This book is designed as a practice-orientated text covering monitoring and equipment, established protocols, pain management, complications and underlying disease. The strength of the book is the inclusion of a relatively wide spectrum of species – dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, small rodents, guinea pigs, ruminants, horses, camelids and pigs. For clinicians or students who may encounter a diversity of species, this is a strong plus. The layout is easy to read with compact bullet points, useful tables of drug doses, tips and tricks from everyday clinical practice and clinical relevance summaries, and also boxes highlighting areas for additional concern and care. The text is user-friendly and applicable, not just theoretical. The book is well illustrated with excellent diagrams and many colour photographs, all appropriately annotated, which is particularly useful for the local anaesthetic techniques. The book includes a further reading section, signposting the reader to more comprehensive reference textbooks on particular topics. This book would be useful for veterinary students, veterinary technicians/nurses and interns who are learning anaesthesia across species, as well as general practice clinicians who may face a variety of species (companion, exotic, maybe camelids) and want a practical easy-to-read text. The book is less suited for specialists in veterinary anaesthesia who require highly detailed pharmacology, rare species detail, or advanced critical care anaesthesia, or clinicians with a single-species workload where more depth may be required.
