A playroom as novel swine enrichment (2007)

Casey, B., Abney, D., Skoumbordis, E.

Abstract

The playroom has been an unqualified boon to our swine facility. Although a devoted playroom has cost some space that might have been used as additional home stalls, the benefits to our animals have far outweighed the costs. The playroom has far exceeded our expectations and has proven to be more than simply a place for the pigs to root. We now have a higher rate of successful new pairings, calmer animals (even when handled by clinical staff ), and less destruction in the pigs' home enclosures.
