De-arousal properties of stereotyped behaviour: Evidence from pituitary-adrenal correlates in pigs

It was demonstrated that stereotyped chain pulling was accompanied by decreased levels of pituitary adrenal activity, and it was suggested that stereotypies enable the animals to decrease excessive arousal rather than provide an extra source of stimulation.

The enrichment of a bare environment for animals in confined conditions

New earth and food were given at the same time ... and all piglets in these groups used the earth trough [for rooting] before [emphasis added] feeding.

A comfortable minimum stress method of restraint for Yucatan miniature swine

Slings make a relatively comfortable restraint for pigs. The pressure on the belly seems to have a calming effect. Most Yucatan pigs, regardless of size, can be restrained by one person when using the sling method. When sling-restrained, most Yucatan...

Restraint reduces size of thymus gland and PHA skin swelling in pigs

Pigs were restrained alone in narrow boxes for two hours a day for three days. The animals subsequently showed reduced thymus weights and immune response, and elevated cortisol levels.

Factors affecting the occurrence of stereotypies in stall-housed dry sows

Feeding extra oat hulls resulted in less bar-biting but more sham-chewing.

Stereotyped behaviour, adjunctive drinking and the feeding periods of tethered sows

The movement of the food trolley causes considerable excitement in the animals, and it is during this period that bar-biting, nose rubbing, and head-weaving occur most rapidly. ... Stereotyped sequences of behaviour may be a means of reducing the arousal...

Social interactions in a group of free-ranging sows

Description of species-typical behavior of free-ranging pigs. No dramatic differences were found between the behaviour of the free-ranging sows and that of the most extensively housed of the indoor groups studied earlier, although great differences were found between free-ranging sows...

The effect of individual and group housing on behavioural and physiological responses related to the welfare of pregnant pigs

These physiological data indicate a chronic stress response and a significant metabolic cost resulting from housing pigs in tethers. Single-housed pigs showed statistically greater amounts of oral-nasal behaviours (manipulation of drinkers, licking/biting pen components) than group-housed pigs.
