Behaviour of pigs and the design of a new housing system
Based on ethological observations of free-ranging pigs, a new housing system was designed incorporating features that allow the animals to express a much wider range of species-typical behavior patterns than in the conventional housing systems. Those species-typical behaviors are described.

Some requirements for the adequate housing of pigs are discussed. Quantitative production performance can be no criterion as to whether the essential demands of the animals concerning locomotion, resting, comfort and social behaviour are met or not. Production yield can...

Pigs raised in an enriched environment with weekly petting were less excitable compared to pigs raised with no extra environmental stimulation. Pigs exposed to an enriched environment approached novel objects more quickly than animals raised in a barren environment. Observation...

It was demonstrated that stereotyped chain pulling was accompanied by decreased levels of pituitary adrenal activity, and it was suggested that stereotypies enable the animals to decrease excessive arousal rather than provide an extra source of stimulation.

Slings make a relatively comfortable restraint for pigs. The pressure on the belly seems to have a calming effect. Most Yucatan pigs, regardless of size, can be restrained by one person when using the sling method. When sling-restrained, most Yucatan...

Pigs were restrained alone in narrow boxes for two hours a day for three days. The animals subsequently showed reduced thymus weights and immune response, and elevated cortisol levels.
