Chimpanzee
The influence of zoo visitors on the behaviour of captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)
Zoo visitors who showed conspicuous behavior in front of the enclosure were a source of stressful excitement (decrease in play behavior, increase in displacement and agonistic behaviors).

Training techniques are described to gain the cooperation of a 3-year old female chimpanzee in obtaining blood and urine samples. The first blood draw occurred during the 18th training session, with a total of 275 minutes invested prior to that....

The groups were observed under two conditions: 1) when they had access to both the indoor and outdoor sections of their enclosures; 2) during cold days when they were locked into the indoor runs, which reduced the available space by...

These results suggest that simple, unstructured affiliation between humans and chimpanzees has a powerful impact on well-being, promoting activity and relaxed conspecific interactions and ameliorating undesirable behaviors [e.g., abnormal behaviors].

In an [successful] effort to reduce abnormal behaviors, especially regurgitation and reingestion, and promote higher activity levels [locomoting and playing], straw and scattered forage material were added to the enclosures of 13 indoor-housed chimpanzees living in pairs and trios.

Behavioural, pharmacological, and physiological evidence supports an association between displacement activities and anxiety in macaques. Information is scarce in other primate and non-primate species. This study contributes to the understanding of the relation between displacement activities and emotional states by...

165 dyadic introduction events were analysed. This information may have important consequences for how we view group formation, and factors such as previous experience and aggression may be less important than the method of introduction and the level of submissive...
