Anticipation of conflict by chimpanzees

Captive chimpanzees appear to anticipate the occurrence of conflict during feeding by grooming and being in proximity at increased rates during the hours prior to feeding. The effect is more marked when food is clumped than when it is dispersed.

Goldfish as enrichment for singly housed chimpanzees

The aquarium [with a single goldfish] was attached to the outside of the chimpanzee's cage ... so that the single-caged subject was able to touch the aquarium but not the fish itself. At the conclusion of this study the authors...

Space requirement stipulations for caged non-human primates in the United States: A critical review

Cage space requirements for non-human primates in the United States of America are less than those in European countries. Studies in support of the assumption that the US legal minimum cage size provides adequate space have limited value because they...

The influence of zoo visitors on the behaviour of captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)

Zoo visitors who showed conspicuous behavior in front of the enclosure were a source of stressful excitement (decrease in play behavior, increase in displacement and agonistic behaviors).

Training to reliably obtain blood and urine samples from a diabetic chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)

Training techniques are described to gain the cooperation of a 3-year old female chimpanzee in obtaining blood and urine samples. The first blood draw occurred during the 18th training session, with a total of 275 minutes invested prior to that....

Human interaction as enrichment for captive chimpanzees: A preliminary report

These results suggest that simple, unstructured affiliation between humans and chimpanzees has a powerful impact on well-being, promoting activity and relaxed conspecific interactions and ameliorating undesirable behaviors [e.g., abnormal behaviors].

Straw and forage material ameliorate abnormal behaviors in adult chimpanzees

In an [successful] effort to reduce abnormal behaviors, especially regurgitation and reingestion, and promote higher activity levels [locomoting and playing], straw and scattered forage material were added to the enclosures of 13 indoor-housed chimpanzees living in pairs and trios.
